AI FOR ALL

AI For All is a self-learning online program designed to raise public awareness about Artificial Intelligence among people from all walks of life. The program was launched by the Honourable Prime Minister in 2021 to democratize AI skills for every citizen and build a ‘Digital First Mindset’ in the country.

Take a sneak peak into the program, get acquainted with AI concepts and receive a customised special-edition badge from Rashtrapati Bhavan and Intel India.

What is AI?

When we talk about Artificial Intelligence, does that mean we are talking about a machine with human-like intelligence?
Well yes. That’s what it is!
Artificial Intelligence is the technology that enables a machine to work intelligently and display its ability to learn as well as solve problems on its own.
So, we can say that when a machine can mimic human intelligence, it is termed as artificially intelligent. In other words, an AI machine has human-like abilities to solve real-world problems, improvise based on its learnings and experiences, make predictions according to the information it has and make decisions on its own.

Which of one these abilities make Artificial Intelligence human-like intelligent?

Need of AI awareness
(Click on marker 1 to start)

  • Now that we have seen the impact of AI in our lives, let us understand why AI is such a big hit today.
  • There are a lot of such technologies that surround us in today’s time but AI has several abilities that makes it more special than any other technology.
  • Let us take a look at some of them.
  • Artificial Intelligence has the potential to analyze huge amounts of data in a very short span of time.
  • It can perform bulky and high-volume tasks efficiently.
  • It can help us achieve incredible accuracy in many real-world problems.
  • With the help of these abilities, AI can help us accomplish tasks that were considered to be either difficult or impossible.
  • This is why a lot of companies and organizations have been incorporating AI in their research and development.

Why is Artificial Intelligence need of the hour?

How do machines learn?

After exploring the abilities of Artificial Intelligence, it is now time for us to see how does this happen.
Let us understand this in two simple steps.
Similar to us, machines too learn from training and experiences.
Remember the first time you were taught mathematics?
  • Starting with numbers, you went through basic arithmetic operations and now you can easily calculate and maintain finances in your daily lives.
  • Information that was taught to us helped us understand the concepts and our experiences improved our performance.
Same is the case with AI too.
Machines are fed with data, which is the information used to build the foundation of their intelligence.
  • Machines are trained on this data and they develop their own understanding around it in the form of algorithms.
  • Once the machine starts functioning, it keeps on updating its algorithm according to its own experiences.
  • Just like us, machines also gather feedback on the mistakes they have made and improvise accordingly.
Here’s how this actually happens:
  1. The machine collects data - Data Acquisition
  2. It analyses the data to find patterns – Data Exploration
  3. It tries out different solutions- Solution Modeling
  4. Receives feedback and figures out the best solution - Evaluation
  5. It implements the optimal solution – Deployment

Application of AI in Government Offices

AI is not just limited to the application within private offices; governments are also using it:
  1. It is used for responding to public grievances and raising tickets through Chatbots.
  2. It is also used to direct requests to the appropriate departments.
  3. It plays a significant role in supporting requests in native languages and their translation through Natural Language Processing.

In Government organizations for official work, which domain of Artificial Intelligence can be used for translation to and from native languages ?

Domains of AI- Statistical Data

AI applications that fall under the domain of Statistical Data deal with numeric or alpha-numerical datasets.
You must have encountered data being collected in the form of series or tables for example, attendance data, results, expense statements, etc.
Such datasets are used under the Statistical Data domain.
  • Some of the applications that come under this domain are:
    • Weather Prediction (on the basis of past climate & weather information),
    • Stock value prediction (through market analysis),
    • Score prediction (on the basis of previous results) and a lot more.
  • To make predictions like these, AI goes through the whole dataset provided, analyzing it to find patterns to predict future trends.

For investment in Stock Market, you can better analyse it using which domain of Artificial Intelligence :

Domains of AI- Natural Language Processing

  • NLP is used by service providers to provide quick assistance and support.
  • The AI-enabled customer-care chatbots understand the queries asked and call out their answers from the database.
  • They use intelligence to give a human-like response.
  • Other applications of AI under the NLP domain include:
    • Sentiment analysis, where an AI-powered bot understands and tracks the mental health of a person,
    • Speech-text conversion,
    • Auto-correct,
    • Automatic sentence completion, and a lot more.

Which of these is/are application/s of Natural Language Processing domain of Artificial Intelligence ?

Domains ( CV - Introduction)

  • As the name suggests, Computer Vision is the science of making machines see.
  • Applications of AI that fall under this domain work with visual data like images and videos.
  • There are a lot of CV based technologies that are not actually powered by AI, like your digital camera or digital TV screens!
  • At the same time, we have many technologies powered by AI that use CV, like your Instagram filters or object detection in self-driving cars!

Let us understand CV in two small steps.
  • Humans perceive sight in the form of colors and shapes.
  • Have you ever heard of pixels and resolutions?
  • Take a look at the picture of the rose below. If we try zooming into the petals, we will soon be seeing blurred square boxes. Each blurred square box is a pixel.
  • Every pixel is a set of numbers indicating the colors that we see.
  • CV is essentially the technique that the computers use to process the set of numbers that are associated with pixels.
  • CV acts as a link between AI and the image or video data.
The wide range of AI applications under this domain are:
  • Security systems (face detection),
  • On-screen fingerprint sensing
  • Creating new artwork by combining images and more.

Why don't we go ahead and try the last example listed here?

For applications like face identification on a Live video stream using Computer Vision, the video is converted to set of images and detection is done on individual images. True or False?
